“The mission of Iowa’s child support program is to provide services to ensure families receive the child support they need in order to be able to meet the financial and health needs of their children.

Why is paying and receiving child support important?

  • It’s good for the children.
  • It’s the law.”

Overview

Iowa’s child support program provides many services to families, such as:

  • Establishing paternity
  • Establishing and enforcing child support orders
  • Modifying child support orders
  • Collecting and distributing child support payments
  • Educational information and materials

The Iowa child support program also offers a variety of resources for non-custodial parents, such as:

  • Parent locator services

  • Education and training opportunities

Iowa courts have the discretion to award child support based on a number of factors, including:

  • Financial needs of the child
  • Standard of living the child would have if the parents were still together
  • Physical and emotional needs of the child
  • Parenting time arrangement
  • Income and assets of each parent
  • Ability of each parent to pay child support

Iowa’s child support program is administered by the Iowa Department of Human Services. If you have any questions about Iowa’s child support program, or if you need help with an existing child support order, please contact your local Iowa Department of Human Services office.
