East Coast Getaways

Beat the heat, find an adventure, be spontaneous, get out of the routine! There are many reasons for a last minute getaway.  There are even more choices of where to go. Why not try an East Coast getaway? The East Coast features diversity, elegance, culture, and extremes. You can veer toward a quick weekend of city life and excitement, or the slow paced leisure of small towns and windy roads. Here are some great picks to choose from.

The Big City

Its hard to make a big city trip last minute to places like Washington DC or New York City if you are coming from far away. If you live somewhat close and can drive in then by all means, there are day or weekend escapes to be had! But if you are looking for a true last minute getaway to a city, there a few that lend a little better to that.

Boston, MA – You can trolley around for the day and explore, take in a baseball game at Fenway, or walk the Freedom Trail while learning some history. Be sure to check out www.smartdestinations.com for deals in Boston and many other cities.

Orlando, FL – Festivals, parades, art shows, holiday activities, concerts…there is always something happening here for the whole family. Check out an events calendar and pick a fun activity.

Burlington, VT – Bike paths, waterfront parks, boating and sightseeing, and history! You could take a tour of a chocolate factory, a homestead, an arts center, and a brewery all in one day.

Baltimore, MD – Check out the National Aquarium, art museums and theaters, an Orioles game, and eat at the Food Market. There are tons of great food options in this city.

The Quieter Side

Acadia National Byway – a great drive through Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island in Maine will cure what ails you. Winding roads through rocky hills takes you up to Cadillac Mountain, where you can be first to watch the sunrise on the East coast, just one of the many spots to check out!

US 1 –  A drive that runs between I-95 and Florida’s east coast, and boasts charming diners and scenic seascapes.

Blue Ridge Parkway – a gorgeous serpentine road that connects Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in North Carolina.

Williamsburg, VA – mingle with re-enactors and learn tons of history as you visit this important town from our country’s past days.

Hilton Head, SC – a pristine beach town, lots of coastal wildlife, small town charm, and great for families.

Rehoboth Beath, DE – a cool beach town with activities for the kids, and adult enjoyment too.
